ALUMNI

 

On November 21, 2015, a group of former students who graduated from (formerly) D.C. Virgo Jr. High School met at 10:00 am at the Cape Fear Museum to discuss organizing an alumni of not only former students, but to include teachers, administrators and staff who attended D. C. Virgo Jr. High School. 

 

The purpose of this meeting was to raise awareness, foster the welfare of student, teacher and community needs, preserve the history of the school and to spark the interest of individuals who still share the same sense of pride and school spirit. 

 

After introductions and an exchange of ideas and suggestions, it was unanimously agreed upon by all in attendance to organize and establish the D.C. Virgo Alumni Association.

 

At this meeting Jacqueline (Jackye) Robbins was elected the first president of the D.C. Virgo Alumni Association.

Highlights of D.C. Virgo Alumni Association Sponsorships and Activities

 

D. C. Virgo Alumni, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)3 Corporation.

 

In the three years as a non-profit organization, our Alumni has provided continuous support for Virgo students, teachers and families.

​

Listed are some examples of our support:

 

                  *Provided household items, clothing, and gift cards for families in need, including those displaced due to Hurricane

                   Florence.

                 *Provided gift cards to Virgo families during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

                 *Funded lunch for 8th grade students on a field trip to Washington D. C. Museum of African  American History.

                 *Host Virgo Teacher/Staff Appreciation Luncheon every February.

                 *Donated zippered jackets, coats, hats, gloves, scarves and also hygiene packets for students.

                 *Hosted breakfast for Virgo Career Fair event in 2018.

                 *Funded catering and decorations for the 8th grade Prom and provided Chaperones.

                 *Fund Summer Camps at Cape Fear Academy, UNCW and Cape Fear Community College for Virgo students annually.

                 *Annually host Back-to-School Open House Cookout.

                 *Annual Sock Hop Fundraiser to provide funds for Summer Camps.

                 *Provide treats for students and community at the Yam Jam Festival, each year.

                 *Donated school supplies throughout the years as needed.

                 *Provided gifts for Teacher/Staff appreciation week in the years 2016 and 2017.

                 *Hosted parent/guardian community cookout in 2017.

                 *Wrote letters of encouragement to students before EOG testing.    

                 *Funded autographed books for 10 students at Book Signing event in 2016.

                 *Donated furniture to decorate the teacher’s lounge.

                 *Volunteering as needed during school day and at family-centered events.
